Moving home with your furry friend doesn’t need to be stressful. There are a number of things you can do in order to conduct a successful move with your pet. At Pers Removals, we’ve put together some top tips when it comes to moving home with your pet.

Use a Pet Carrier

A pet carrier is the best way to keep your cat or dog safe during a house move. If you don’t want to use this method, you can contact local catteries or kennels to find out if they have availability for the day of your move. However, many pet owners like to have their pet with them on the day of the move.

Bring Treats for the Journey

If you do decide to take your pet in your car with you on the day of the move, bear in mind it can be a stressful experience for them. You can calm your pets nerves by giving him or her some nibbles or pet toys for the journey – no matter how long or short the journey is. If your pet seems particularly stressed with all of the disruption caused by moving home, take their food and water bowl for the journey so that they have something they’re used to, to comfort them.

Give your Pet Time to Settle In

A new home environment can be very stressful for a pet. New surroundings, furniture and maybe even people can really upset an animal. With this in mind, you should understand that it may take a while for your pet to get used to the new house and surrounding areas, so sticking to a routine is essential. Also, let your pet explore the new surroundings with ease.

Place their food and water in the same place as well as their litter tray if your pet is a cat. It’s also important to keep your pet indoors for at least two weeks. It takes roughly this amount of time for cats and dogs to become fully accustomed to their new surroundings. Once they are used to the new house, go outside with them so they know where the new house is when they want to come back. If you own a dog, use a lead.
